My Students
My students are energetic and enthusiastic 9 and 10 year olds who love to learn new things! They love read-alouds of every kind and going to our school media center each week. Most come from low income/single family homes and love to take advantage of all the great opportunities our school has to offer. Several members of our class also speak different languages! We are an arts integration magnet school, so students enjoy classes like drums, dance, strings, and STEAM in addition to a regular related arts schedule. We also incorporate the arts in to our general education curriculum.
My Project
My students enjoy books but struggle to stay engaged our entire independent reading time (25 minutes). Incorporating at least one flashlight day a week has been proven by countless teachers to increase student stamina, focus, and enjoyment of reading time. The majority of my class reads below grade level so it is vital they are reading effectively and with purpose each day. Not only will these flashlights be used for independent reading, but they will also be used for several science activities to increase our understanding of constellations, Earth's rotation, and the rise and setting of the sun in our Astronomy unit.
