Lighting Up for Learning

My students need a light table and accompanying translucent materials to provide them with a way to play that provides additional sensory input, soothing play, and sustained attention to materials.

My Students

These incredible students are between the ages of 3 and 5 who are beginning their educational journey! They live in our nation's capital and are learning in a school where nearly 100% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch. The kids in my classroom have a wide range of developmental disabilities and are working towards kinder readiness through play.

These kids are eager to grow and learn, and come to school to play, draw, read, and build with their peers.

We cannot wait for a new school year full of opportunities!

My Project

We are so excited for the potential of adding a light table to our preschool/Pre-K classroom! There are so many benefits of light play! Light tables are often used for science and discovery activities, however, we plan on using the light table for so much more than that!

Light tables can be used for so many different activities in the classroom like literacy, math, music, writing, sensory time, and science, while also providing valuable visual sensory input.

By creating an engaging and interactive learning space, children are encouraged to engage in learning activities through play without even realizing it, and hold the attention of even the youngest children. The light table will lure children and keep them engaged at all parts of the day.

While our students are engaging with the translucent materials requested as a part of this project or other materials we create throughout the year, they will be stimulated and often calmed by the visual input as they explore a the center. The opportunities with this table are endless!
