This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the hardest working and most academic driven students I have ever worked with. Most of the time, school is their only safe place - the one location they can thrive without fear of negative outside influences.

Often times, students will work at the school on Saturdays, during holidays, and many hours after school to avoid going home.

Because these awesome, wonderful, intelligent people spend so much time at school, I want their learning environment to be as safe and comfortable as possible. Our classroom needs to be a safe haven for as many students as possible.

My Project

Fluorescent lights hinder the educational setting. Everywhere you are in a school, students are surrounded by this unnatural light source. I can cite studies that state students are not successful in a room that is ablaze with this type of lighting. The students deserve an environment is that is suited to their needs; therefore, I want to turn off the lights and give my students more natural light. This is especially beneficial in the afternoons when students are already tired and need a soothing environment to learn. In addition, some students have a light sensitivity which further hinders their academic success.

The students in my classroom will have the opportunity to have a place where they can all comfortably come together to learn.

In addition to the new lighting, we are also requesting a new carpet. Carpets are special places that help students learn and it is much more welcoming than a cold, hard tile floor. Community is so critical in developing confident, capable learners. By having a classroom carpet, the students will have a chance to get out of their chairs and come together to learn up close and personal!
