I am a Kindergarten teacher in a low income school where many students qualify to receive free and reduced lunches. Poverty is a reality for most of my students who come from varied backgrounds, cultural beliefs, races and ethnicities.
My students readily engage when presented with relevant and diversified literature and activities that meet them where they are and celebrate who they are.
They practice kindness, contribution, and determination on a daily basis and work together to make our classroom climate one of acceptance, safety, and optimal learning.
It's important that my students have rich, vibrant books that are both diverse and engaging as they develop critical thinking and learn about the world around them. My project is to provide 37 culturally diverse and engaging books for our classroom. That provides one book per week for the entire school year.
More than just read alouds, they will provide the base from which to build literacy skills and participate in cross curricular activities and learning projects.
We will read them together-accessing prior knowledge and making new connections--and infuse literacy into our learning all day long.
