Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students come from families that battle with the struggles of poverty, trauma, living in the shelter system or projects. My students are predominantly Hispanic or black. In addition to their personal struggles outside of school, each of my students has a learning disability and has had many failures in their short educational careers before entering my classroom.

In a diverse community, resources are often limited and teachers must dip in their own pockets to ensure students receive a high quality education they are entitled too.

The vast majority of students in the school qualify for free and reduced lunch.

This year, one of my goals is to construct an organized classroom that builds student autonomy and independence. Having flexible seating and clear organizational systems is one way to meet this goal.

My Project

Overhead lighting in older classrooms is the worst! Fluorescent lighting frequently flickers, breaks, or makes a soft buzzing noise that can be hard to block out. I know I have found myself sitting in class distracted by the buzzing sound, unable to block it out.

Strategically placing lamps around the classroom allows for noise-free soft lighting, helping to eliminate unnecessary sensory stimulation for students with sensory processing.

As a special education teacher, I work diligently to create a barrier-free learning environment. Sensory stimulation is frequently overlooked but can cause dysregulation. In addition, a doorbell in our classroom will be an easy way to get students attention when activities end and clean-up begins. Finally the digital clock will allow students autonomy when signing out for the bathroom.
