My Students
I teach as the special education teacher in a public pre-school collaborative classroom at a Los Angeles Unified School District Early Education Center in Pacoima California. This class combines typically developing students with students with Individual Education Plans (IEP). There are 15 students from the ages of 3 to 5 years old with varying abilities. Fifty percent are second language learners, and from families who have qualified for free preschool because of financial need. Due to the age range, they have varying abilities. However, they all have their enthusiasm, joy and curiosity in common. They love to play, experiment, and discover together. This combination provides opportunities for students to learn from each other. Our class has a strong sense of cooperation with the older children helping the younger children learn to play and participate in preschool. Everyday we see an older child leading a younger child in play, encouraging them to ride a tricycle, or go down the slide. The children both support and challenge each other every day. They build strong relationships with the teachers and their peers, preparing them to participate fully when they transition to Elementary School.
My Project
My Preschool students learn by discovery and free play. This light table is fun and unique way for them to experiment with quantities. It is a good place for an individual child to play and relax when they need a break from the hustle and bustle of our busy classroom.
The light table appeals to all students in our class.
The three year old's can move objects around and enjoy the lights change and develope fine motor skills. The 4 to 5 year olds can sort, and count the objects.
