My Project
My students are a very diverse group of learners! I teach music in a PK-5 elementary school in the mountains of NC and many of my students have never traveled beyond the area where we live. I teach students with a wide variety of special needs in addition to students who are academically gifted.
Last year, my second graders were fortunate to be able to attend a professional percussion concert.
During one of the pieces, the lights were turned off in the auditorium and the percussionists played with light up drumsticks. It was incredible! My students were so inspired and still talk about the experience. One of them had the idea that we do a performance on our annual Arts Night featuring light up drumsticks. If I am able to get these drumsticks for my students, we will use them in performances; but we will also use them in class to make practicing rhythms more exciting. It is important to me that my students learn to read notes and rhythms in elementary school. I am always looking for new and exciting ways to make rhythm practice fun. What could be more fun for my students than bucket drumming in the dark with light up drumsticks?
