Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently teach in a Title I school located in a low socioeconomic area of Orlando, Florida. One hundred percent of students receive free breakfast, lunch, and supper.

Most of our scholars are English as a Second Language learners.

I currently have students from different countries, different formal education experiences, and different types of learning. Many are coming to this country after having traumatic experiences in their home country and are living with family members other than their parents. Regardless of these circumstances, my students are hardworking and eager to learn.

As a music instructor, I get to teach the whole student body in our school. Our music room is a happy, safe, loving and important place for them.

My Project

Students enjoy playing drums in Music class; we are very fortunate to have a class set of drums. Our students need to use their hands to play the drums and this is not the safest way at this time. The drum sticks will provide the opportunity for the students to play in the classroom without touching the drumheads and spreading germs. Plastic drumsticks can be easily sanitized without getting damaged, and provide playing opportunities to students.

Drumming skills help with beat competency, ensemble playing, and self-esteem.

As students progress, they will be able to do solo and ensemble work to build musicianship, and practice socialization. We will be able to use the drumsticks in classroom and concert settings, and add showmanship to our performances.

Having a class set of plastic light-up drumsticks is not only exciting, but will give all students a chance to play drums in class without the fear of spreading germs. This will motivate the whole student body to continue to excel in music class, where so many restrictions have taken place due to the pandemic.
