My Students

I teach kindergarten through sixth grade music in a 100% poverty school in the city of Cincinnati. My students are about 90% African American, with a rising Nepalese refugee population of about 5%+. The other 5% of my students are Caucasian and Hispanic.

Since I am the music teacher, I work with all 600-700 students in our building.

Our district does its best at providing us with resources, but with over 70 schools in our district, in a very high needs population, it is difficult for them to provide everything we need.

My Project

As the school Music Teacher, I see all 600-700 students in my classroom every single week. I am one of the only classrooms that is in the middle of the building and can provide no natural light for my students. Classroom environment is always of the upmost importance to me, so I want to provided a calming and sensory appropriate learning environment for my students.

According to "Advances in Pediatric Research," "Research has shown that daylight can impact human mood, performance, and well- being; including children and schools.

'Light is the most important environmental input, after food and water, in controlling bodily functions' [1]. However, daylight must be supplemented with artificial lighting and today’s society is exposed to more artificial light than daylight [2]... Studies have shown a major increase in positive perceptions and behavior within the work and classroom environment when incorporating LED fixtures with higher correlated color temperatures (CCT); specifically, positive engagement and increase in on-task behaviors [3]."

I have already purchased 4 lamps (and light bulbs) on my own, but am unable to fund this entire project on my own. Please help me provide coverings for the 22 fluorescent lights in my classroom, as well as full-spectrum lamps so that my students can enjoy a more calming musical experience each week.
