My Students
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and attend a school that focuses on project-based learning. As such, they are accustomed to working on collaborative projects and taking deep dives into several areas of our curriculum, including literature, history, and art.
My students are at a dynamic age; they inquisitively view the world through lenses that are both curious and magical.
As their teacher, I am constantly exploring new ways to keep them enthusiastically engaged in all that we do. They always bring a lot to the table and never cease to amaze me.
My Project
Students will explore SOCIAL JUSTICE issues, and systems of oppression, through several lenses, including literary analysis, historical context and current events. They will work with a partner to choose one issue (oppression based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, education or class), followed by scholarly research and the development of a thesis on the topic.
American Hate will be used to bridge the gap between statistics and what is actually happening to Americans right now.The 57 Bus, Speak and Shout will be used as "choice books" with in the larger project.
These valuable resources includes chilling tales from hate crime survivors, as well as their friends, families and bystanders. These readings will add depth to my students' study, and humanize what would otherwise seem like sorrowful statistics.
