This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Light Up My Students Lives
Students are growing up in a world that is constantly moving and changing. They are used to having many different images and sounds bombarding their minds rapidly, which is why they often find themselves bored in today's classrooms. Teachers need to captivate their students attention in a way that will entice them to learn and focus.
One way that I have seen students connect with the learning is through technology. I work in an under privileged school in San Francisco, California where we share one projector for the whole school. This makes incorporating technology into my teaching difficult. I teach a 4th/5th Spanish bilingual classroom and most of my students are performing far below grade level. I have four students reading at a kindergarten level and need lots of intervention to teach them how to read again! This has been quite a challenge for me but am working diligently to ensure that they will leave my class reading at a higher level.
I truly feel that an LCD projector will contribute to my students learning because it will give the students the visual stimuli that they need. It also provides me with the ability to look at the class while I teach for better classroom management, instead of writing on the board with my back to them. Furthermore, books can be projected up on the board for students to see, as well as movies or computers. I have used one in the past and was able to teach many different and exciting lessons because of the ability to connect my computer to the projector. Students genuinely connected better to the learning due to the incorporation of technology into the classroom.
Bringing Reading to Life
Students need to read, read, read! This is the best way that they are going to improve their skills. Reading aloud is vital to their learning because they can hear themselves much more clearly. In a classroom setting, reading aloud can be difficult because all the students are competing for their voices to be heard.
With the use of the phonics phones, students can read aloud to themselves while diminishing the noise in the room. Students also find this simple device great fun because they get to pretend like they are speaking on the cell phone while reading. I have seen this be a great incentive for students to read. I teach a 4/5 Spanish bilingual classroom and many of my students are reading at a kindergarten and first grade level. They are in desperate need of intervention to teach them to read again in order for them to make it in Jr. High.
I feel that the use of phonics phones will greatly help their reading ability because they will be able to hear themselves read more clearly and it will make reading for those struggling readers much more exciting!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
