Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"You can dream, create, design and build the most wonderful place in the world, but it takes people to make the dream a reality." ~ Walt Disney
I teach general music in a high poverty K-6 inner-city public school in Indiana.
Our school has 600 students who love the arts! They are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. My students come to music willing to sing a new song, learn a folk dance, play a rhythm instrument, choreograph movement to a song, write a rap, work on a composer project, or explore Garage Band on our iPads! My students know that I have an open-door policy in my room! If I don't have a class, they are always welcome to come hang out! Usually this means that they are rehearsing choreography, practicing a song, playing the bells, dancing to the xBox, or just letting me know how their day is going! I work hard for them, and they work hard for me!
My Project
I am always thinking of new ways to make our performances and lessons more fun for the audience and my students!
LIGHTS! We want to add some color and light choreography to our songs! Every year we use "candles" (small flashlights) to light up our faces during the finale of our holiday program as we sing "Silent Night." We've also used LED glove choreography for Michael Jackson's "Earth Song." Now, I'm requesting LED tambourines and maracas to use during our Hispanic program! I've already chosen a lively polka, "Jesusita En Chihuahua," which will lend itself well to the instrument choreography! The "house" lights will be off, the brass and string instruments will be playing, and the students will be moving their maracas and tambourines in eye-catching patterns! FUN for everyone!
I am also requesting green and white (school colors) LED wands for a beautiful folk song entitled "Green and White." It references the snow and the evergreen trees left in the forest during the winter.
My students deserve every opportunity to explore and create in music.
They can learn so much through movement and rhythm. To go on these new adventures, my students need some LED instruments and LED wands to light up our performances! Thank you so much for considering this project and for supporting my incredible students! All Aboard! Next stop: Light Up Our Music! Please!
