This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What is the closest thing to magic? Science! For our littlest learners, the light table in our room is a magical experience. They are mesmerized by the way they can manipulate color with the light.
Our classroom is home to two half day Early Childhood Special Education classes.
With up to 12 children per class, they keep myself and my assistant on our toes. The children are mostly 3 and 4 year olds with developmental delays in the moderate to severe range. All of the students are from a community plagued by high crime, high poverty, and low graduation rates.
My Project
Currently we are very limited in materials that work well with our light table. The addition of the light theme box, mirrors and cube/block manipulatives would allow us to rotate materials and make the light table a permanent part of our sensory and science areas.
Generally speaking, our students have very short attention spans and difficulty sharing learning materials.
Sensory activities are the exception. The children are memorized by the light and color. They will spend long periods of time experimenting with the limited colored tiles we currently have. I am so excited to see what they will be able to do with theses new materials.
