it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Color here, color there, colors they are everywhere!
Young learners begins to make distinctions in their world, by using colors and shape. Visual discrimination of shapes is a precursor to reading, and understanding colors, hues, and tints helps creativity and descriptive language.
Many of my students have had no school experience before they arrive in Kindergarten.
They speak languages other than English at home, and are primarily school dependent learners. Our school falls in the highest poverty category, however what our families may lack in finances, they make up for in rich cultural diversity.
My Project
Teaching science in Kindergarten is about inquiry, experimentation, and discovery. A light table will facilitate student exploration of colors, tints, hues, shadows, and shapes. Using the Magna Tiles, they will be architects and artist, while they watch the colors blend and change and the shape tiles combine to make new shapes. The combinations and possibilities are endless. The students will be able to work at their own pace, and explore the specific aspects of shapes and colors that peak their curiosity. Watching their friends build, blend and construct, will give them ideas to use on their own structures. They will learn how colors work together and how a few simple shapes are the basis of many more intricate shapes.
The light table and the Magna Tiles will be an amazing addition to our classroom, as they will provide deeper and more meaningful experiences for my students while they explore colors and shapes.
The students will be able to self direct their learning based on their own wonderings. Questioning, and curiosity are essential for students to broaden their thinking, learn how to solve problems, and express their creativity.
