My Students

Imagine going to school and never having materials to participate in hands on experiments to explore concepts being taught. That is a reality in my classroom. We are desperate for science materials so we can engage in our learning at a much deeper and authentic level.

The students who are a part of our learning community are truly spectacular.

Daily I am in awe of the challenges many of them face. Despite these ominous challenges my students come to school everyday with an eagerness to learn! Some of the challenges my students face are not having their basic needs met (food, shelter and clothing). Others face the challenges of being moving to a new country many after living in a violent and unsafe place prior to securing refuge in America. It is inspiring to see how hard these kids work everyday. Our learning community strives to represent our school by adhering to our school guiding principles: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Cooperative, and Be Safe. It is priority to learn and that involves content and how to be a productive member of a community.

My Project

The materials requested will provide 3rd grade students with an opportunity to explore the concepts of electricity. They will have literature to read and build understanding of electricity as well as content related vocabulary. Additionally the science kits will allow students to engage in hands on activities such as building electrical circuits. Students will apply higher order thinking skills as they work their way through the scientific process. Additionally, students will learn how to record and discuss scientific findings.

Due to the high needs population of our students our school based funds have been allocated to the core subjects- reading, writing and math.

This has left little to no funding to provide resources for other areas of study. We could greatly use the funding so we have hands on materials to explore with. By funding this project you will open the door to a world of science not just my classroom but for all 65 3rd graders at my School.
