My Students

My students are preschoolers with an identified disability such as speech impairment, cognitive impairment, autism spectrum disorder, or vision/physical/health impairment.

They may appear like the typical precocious two, three, four, or five years old until they speak or interact with their environment or other children/adults.

Then it becomes apparent that they need more support for their learning in order to gain those academic, gross, and fine motor, behavioral, and communication skills that come much easier to their non-impaired peers.

My goal for my students is that at the end of their educational journey with me - whether I have them for a few months or a few years - they are ready to join their non-disabled peers in a general education classroom with fewer supports needed than when they started. I want them to be empowered.

My Project

Young children learn through using their senses as they explore toys, objects and the world around them. This is especially true for children with sensory needs. Their surroundings are filled with materials, objects, lights and colors that grab their attention. Selecting a focus is challenging.

Using a light table while dimming nearby lighting in the classroom will give the students an environment that allows them to focus on light, shadow, color and discover how all of it interacts.

Colorful or transparent materials will captivate their visual senses and may provide an avenue for learning concepts that they can now see in another type of setting.
