This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are pre-school to first graders in a self-contained supported learning classroom. They are a very diverse group of learners, and many face daily challenges that most adults have never had to.
They deserve the best, and I try each day to deliver just that!
Despite any limitations they may face, my students are an enthusiastic group of children that love to try new things and get very excited when we get to introduce something new. I have a friendly, outgoing class that is eager to learn and a joy to teach!
My Project
Light tables are an amazing way to explore light and learn about how different materials react to being placed on a light source. Light tables are a unique educational item that can help children learn and explore through a whole new world. From open ended play to arts and crafts to teaching educational concepts, there is so much to do on the light table!
My pre-school to first graders with special needs will be able to attend better to activities, calm down during stressful moments for them, and explore how the light affects the materials they'll be able to use with the light table!
Light tables can be used for learning and exploring different educational toys and materials, and as therapy for autistic, sight impaired and other special needs children.
My students will be able to practice noticing differences between living and non-living things using the x-rays. The 3D shapes blocks will allow them to discover the characteristics of shapes, while encouraging fine and gross motor skills. The agate slices will go with our earth unit as children explore their layers and we talk about heat, pressure and time. The clear color glasses will encourage stacking and recognizing changing colors.
The glow of the light table will add a whole new element for sensory input. Toys look different with light beneath them, colors are more vivid, and children can discover details in nature. Light tables help children focus their attention for lengthier periods of time, not only enriching their play experience, but academic activities are attended to longer so concepts and skills are retained. The glow and the quiet setting can also create a calming activity to settle students down that may be overstimulated or overwhelmed with their day. Students will be able to play, calm down and learn!
