We are a Title I school with a total enrollment of over 700 students in grades PreK-through 5th. Our school is located in an urban setting. The school serves a diverse population where over half of the students are bilingual. Nearly 60% of the students are Hispanic, 17% African-American, and 12% Caucasian. Additionally, 99% of our students qualify for the free and reduced-price lunch program. More than three-fourths of the student population resides in low-income apartment complexes.
I am a librarian at this school who has embraced the makerspace movement, I have transformed my library into a STEM work space.
Students come to my library not only to check out books, but also to create projects, work with various apps, create videos, and code just to name a few things. My library is a happening place where you will see students learning and exploring new ideas every day.
My Project
Students are full of curiosity and wonder. I want to provide fuel for their curiosity by giving my students interactive supplies for our light table.
This grant will provide us with plant, animal, and human x-rays so students can inspect and observe what these specimens look like on the inside.
Students will be able to place this x-rays on the light table and being able to look at them and study them just like Dr. and Scientist do.
This grant will also supply students with iridescent building materials so they can build with and explore color combinations on the light table.
This grant will also expose our students to future careers. By exposing students to the X-ray images and allowing them to inspect the specimen’s students may become fascinated with the human body and want to enter a medical field job. Furthermore, students may also want to become an engineer from playing with our building supplies from the grant.
