This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at this school come from neighborhoods within and surrounding the city. Because nearly 65% of households receive SNAP/TANF benefits, the school participates in a CEP program. This allows the school to feed all students breakfast and lunch at no cost to families. Those participating in after-school programs are also fed dinner.
Our students are creative and culturally aware, growing and learning in an environment where arts and academics are integrated.
There is an energy and a spirit that moves them through each lesson and activity. The scholars are engaged, persistent, and confident.
My Project
Physical computing, the combination of programming and engineering, engages my students in a magical way. They code an algorithm and can immediately see the results in the physical world.
When students connect art and coding, their creativity is boundless.
Chibitronics sets combine LED stickers, conductive tape, and a clip-on processor. Students will be creating simple, light-up greeting cards to begin. As they gain confidence, they will create drawings and journal entries that combine light, movement, and sound. All of this is controlled by a program the student wrote and installed on the clip-on processor.
Traditional electronics require soldering and breadboards. Chibitronics lowers the floor to allow access at a lower skill level. At the same time, the adaptability creates a high ceiling, allowing students to soar.
