This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My middle school technology and computer students are very creative! Over the summer, I took the Pathfinders Institute course on using Chibitronics LED stickers to create light-up cards and art this summer, and I know my students would love to start making circuits to light up LEDs and take their art to new...LIGHTS!
Using the conductive fabric tape, students will learn how to make the electricity from coin batteries go through it and light up the LEDs by placing gaps between the tape.
They'll get to use design thinking to plan their circuits: they'll understand why electricity short circuits and how to make it flow the way they want it to. They will be able to understand that electrons from the battery flow through the circuit in a current and that we can increase the current by adding more (or larger) batteries. (We like using rechargeable batteries because we're a green school and we care about slowing down/stopping climate change!) We will also explore why we sometimes need to slow down the current with resistors so we don't overload the circuit.
They will not only develop their art skills, but they'll also learn about circuits and electricity. I know my makers will love designing cards and artwork that can light up and make their friends and family smile! Thanks so much for considering our project!
