This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a class of seven students ranging in age from 6-8. These children all have severe and profound mental and physical disabilities. Their disabilities include epilepsy ,cerebral palsy, low vision, hearing loss, and developmental delay. Some of the students are non-ambulatory, non-verbal, and require maximum assistance from adults to complete simple tasks. These children show the most response and enthusiasm when presented with auditory and tactile stimulation.
Several of the students in my class have low vision or no vision at all. The students are very responsive to changes in lights, shadows, and colors. We have a light box that we use to display a variety of colors of light with patterns and shadows. The students have begun to look at the light. The students become more alert and seem to focus when there is a change in the light.
After researching methods for stimulating children with low vision, I found the lighted bubble tube. This tube changes colors and has bubbles floating through the water. This bubble tube creates a multi-sensory environment that will visually stimulate and alert them. They can be left on in a darkened room to sooth, calm, and entertain the child or it can be used with a switch to let the child independently control the stimulation.
You will make it possible for children with low vision to experience visual stimulation through lights and movement. Something as simple and light and movement could make many students motivated to be alert and to use a switch to turn the bubbles off an on. Imagine being able to see a change in the light in your environment! Many of these students only experience fluorescent lighting being on or off.
