Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Excited, inquisitive and enthusiastic students are waiting to be discovered by you in an inner city, multicultural and economically challenged neighborhood school! Here is a group of students desiring to explore the varieties of science activities needed to become our future scientists, engineers and doctors. I am the science teacher for the most wonderful group of elementary students in the metro city. I teach grades second through sixth and am responsible for nurturing a love for science in these children. I love creating such an environment for them; they want to learn and I feel like Mrs. Frizzle without her Magic School Bus!

This year, our state education department has decided that we need to teach the concepts of light and sound to younger elementary children. They are very curious about light and how it works and want to see what I am talking about when I tell them that you can take light apart and turn it into colors. I think they believe me, but we have nothing that we can use for materials to demonstrate these concepts. Our District has lost major funding because we are located where our support comes from the automotive industry which is failing at the present time. I need to find other sources for supplies, so I am turning to you for this worthy cause.

We need prisms that can be handled by the children so they can explore bending light rays and breaking apart the colors. They have never seen a prism because I don’t have any. The color wheel will show how the colors separate and form from primary colors. Our children want to find out how light rays were discovered and recreate the experiments that proved the existence of infrared and ultraviolet rays and these light supplies would help us do those experiments. Prisms will allow the students to see how light can bend when passed through the right substance. The sound kits would give me materials to demonstrate sound even to my hearing impaired and blind students because they could feel the pitch of the forks through bone conduction. The blind students could create the sounds themselves using the tuning forks. This is an amazing opportunity for us and I want to help them achieve this.

You can become a part of this exciting venture for my students. By helping us fund these necessary units of instruction and discovery, you can become a part of our classroom and be a detective along with us. You will help us to prove that UV light truly exists, has its own special temperature as does IR light. In fact, you can help us discover that each light color has its own temperature and is useful for many things. Come along and help us reach this goal! You will forever be assured of making a difference in their future, and ultimately your own. These students are our future, and yours, too.
