My students need 5 Sphero balls, a mini iPad and case, glow in the dark glasses and paracord, and finger lights in order to design, choreograph, and perform a light show.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Creative. Motivated. Hard Working. Dedicated. These are all words that can describe our 5th grade students and their passion for learning new things and taking on new challenges. This year we are ready to present them with a challenge of fusing the arts and robotics in a fun and exciting way!
My students are enthusiastic and eager learners.
They are my inspiration as they push me to think outside of the box to develop learning experiences to meet their varying interests and diverse needs. My students represent a very mixed population both culturally and economically, and despite challenges, they always give their own personal best and push to succeed! I teach at a Title 1 school where I am lucky enough to get to work with such dedicated and hard working students and partner with a group of supportive parents who share a common goal in the education of their children.
My Project
The materials I am requesting are for the first part of a two part project that I am collaborating on with my 5th grade team partner. Our goal is to infuse dance and robotics that will culminate in a light show finale for a school performance. Students will first use the iPad to learn coding and programming in order to control the Sphero robots. Once they have managed the sequence of coding, they will work in teams to design a light show that integrates robotics, dance, and music. Both classes will work together on a design concept and select roles and responsibilities. Ideas will be researched and sketched out, agreed upon in teams, and written proposals submitted. Once approved, students will begin the process of selecting music or creating original pieces using GarageBand on the iPad, choreographing the robotics to music and creating dance movements to intertwine with the light-up Sphero balls. The glasses, cord, and finger lights can also be used in their show if they so choose.
This project will make a difference, because it's the first time we will have integrated technology with dance in a truly unique way!
It's exciting because students will become the designers and creators of this project, as my colleague and I will become facilitators of their learning process. We can't wait to see this project take shape!
