This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Current research shows how extreme technology use is affecting students' critical thinking and social-emotional development. On the other hand, paper books contribute to the preservation of literacy skills. They encourage sustained attention and concentration, fostering critical thinking and analytical abilities. Reading physical books requires a deliberate effort that helps develop patience and focus, skills that are increasingly valuable in a fast-paced digital landscape.

Even though reading paper books has a lot of benefits for students, every day is a challenge for teachers to help them enjoy reading, especially when they have to read independently.

My goal for this project is to create a peaceful and relaxed environment where the students will have their own lamps, lighting their own books with personal book lights. This will help them to focus on their independent reading while enjoying their personal adventure in their books. This lights will help them to focus while they are reading in silence, while lights are down.

My students are so special. They all have visions for their future and goals to achieve. Even though they come from low-income families, they are motivated to work hard and find the resources they need to achieve their goals. I am aware that technology has a lot of benefits, and it is important to know how to navigate through it. That is why I like to make a balance and not use it excessively in my class. I sadly see how the immoderate use of screens and digital devices are being a distraction. I deeply believe that by unplugging and engaging with a physical book, we give ourselves a mental respite and create a focused environment conducive to deep reading and reflection. This break from constant connectivity can be refreshing and contribute to overall well-being. I believe that having a book light can make a difference in my students' everyday reading experience.
