Light Box Artists

Help me give my students the gift of building confidence in their own skills by helping us purchase light boxes. With these tools, early artists can practice tracing to give them the confidence to draw on their own.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a K-8 Visual Arts teacher in a Title 1 school in Chicago's south suburbs. The Art Department receives a budget for basic Art necessities (paint, paper, coloring supplies) but they crave projects that explore new media, techniques, and ways of thinking. I do my best to supplement our budget with my own money, but I see half of the students in a large school district. My students shouldn't have a mediocre art class because my bank account can't fund their projects.

Exploration of Fine Arts creates a lasting impact on my students, who are often told to focus on test scores instead of growing their creative brain.

I consider it my duty to give them as many artistic experiences as possible to think outside of the box, learn problem solving, and see that sometimes what they think is a mistake can become even more beautiful than their originally intended design.

My Project

These light boxes will not only help early elementary students gain confidence in their art through tracing, but as students progress through the art curriculum, they can use these light boxes to create more sophisticated layered projects that can also be created by taping their project layers to a window. Unfortunately, my classroom is in the basement, so my students are unable to use that resource to create their designs. Because of this, there are projects my students simply cannot do.

Animation is one of my students' most-mentioned professions when they tell me they're interested in art as a career, and I would love to give them some real-life experience in the magic of making their characters come to life.

With these light boxes, we can create flipbooks, layered design projects, and even short animated films.
