This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My young students benefit from a light and sensory table for several key developmental reasons, such as sensory exploration, fine motor skills, cognitive development, language development, creativity and imagination, and calming and focus. Light and sensory tables stimulate the senses, especially sight and touch, which is essential for brain development in early childhood. Children learn by exploring textures, colors, shapes, and materials in a hands-on way. Manipulating small objects like beads, sand, water, or translucent shapes helps develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor control, both important for writing and daily tasks. Activities on the table can promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and early math and science concepts. For example, children might experiment with color mixing, shadows, sorting, and patterning. As children explore and describe what they see and feel, they build vocabulary and language skills. It also encourages storytelling and communication with peers or adults. The open-ended nature of sensory and light play invites creativity. Children might pretend the glowing surface is a magical landscape or create art with transparent materials. The soft glow of a light table and the soothing textures of sensory materials can have a calming effect, helping children regulate their emotions and stay engaged longer.
