This project is for a life saving device called LifeVac. It is a device that is used when someone is choking. This device has saved thousands of children and adults that were choking and the Heimlich maneuver was not working.
Young children often (and even adults on occasion) do not chew their food well before swallowing it and choke on their food.
I have had several incidents this year alone in my classroom where a student has choked on their food. Many of my younger students also tend to put items in their mouth that do not belong when they are exploring or sensory seeking, which is another leading cause of choking. I am certified in first aid, CPR, and the Heimlich maneuver. Unfortunately the Heimlich maneuver does not always work. I found this out, many years ago when a young toddler I was watching choked on a piece of paper. The Heimlich maneuver did not work because the paper was so small and light. I was able to remove the piece of paper with the help from another co worker but it was a very scary and serious situation that I never want to be in again. When a friend told me about LifeVac I immediately knew I wanted to do a project for this amazing life saving device! This device can be put in our classrooms and our first aid bag so if a student is ever choking, we will have this device to help save their life!
