Lifelong Passion for Learning Through Reading!

My students need an assorted collection of books that teach the International Bacclaureate(IB) learner profile while learning to read, including the King Series by Townsend Press.

My Students

We teach our students to be IB Learners: Inquirers, Thinkers, Communicators, Risk-Takers, Knowledgeable, Principled, Caring, Open-Minded, Balanced and Reflective. We need interesting books that reflect these lessons while learning to read.

Students at our high poverty urban International Baccalaureate (IB) school in Colorado are diverse socioeconomically, ethnically, and in abilities.

We are also home to two "center" programs: Affective Needs Center and Multi-Intensive Special Education Center. Special education kids are integrated into "mainstream" classrooms. The IB Primary Years Program (PYP) emphasizes lifelong learning, striving to create compassionate, contributing global citizens. We focus and organize our inquiries into themes like "Sharing the Planet," "Who We Are in Place and Time," and "How We Express Ourselves." In addition, we have a vibrant "specials" program including regular art, music, gym, and Spanish.

My Project

The cornerstone of the PYP rests on the value of lifelong learning. Two essential concepts support this value. The first is the “Learner Profile” which recognizes the whole student as a lifelong learner by being: Inquirers, Thinkers, Communicators, Risk-Takers, Knowledgeable, Principled, Caring, Open-Minded, Balanced and Reflective. The second is the, “The IB Attitudes.” These include: Appreciation, Commitment, Confidence, Cooperation, Creativity, Curiosity, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Independence, Integrity, Respect and Tolerance. These IB attitudes are cultivated throughout our classrooms. Students and teachers share the responsibility for establishing “Essential Agreements,” a pact for learning with respect and cooperation. The learner profile attributes are assessed on report cards three times per year to ensure students are responsible for understanding these philosophies. We are requesting books that teach the IB Learner Profile, including the King Series by Townsend Press.

Technology and our understanding of the world evolves, but a developed passion for learning evolves with those changes.

For our Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st graders, these books will buttress those lessons through storytelling. We know tight school budgets are a common story. Thank you for considering funding ours.
