I teach first grade in an urban community school that services students pre-K to eighth grade. My school offers health, dental, and after school program services.
My students are eager and excited learners who come from a variety of ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds.
They are supportive of each other to help one another learn and grow. The majority of my students are English Language Learners. I want to do my best to provide them with various ways to access learning in my classroom.
My students love reading and enjoy all different types of books. However, many of my students are not reading on grade level. Over 75% of my students are English Language Learners and need support with learning to read, write, and speak English. By having a listening center, my students will be able to access different books on their level and read along to the tape in order to support their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Having access to audio books will enable my students to access and engage with text in an effective and supportive way.
The listening center will be a great addition to our daily literacy centers. During centers, my students rotate through several different centers. This center will be an excellent addition as it will be an interactive way for my students to actively engage with text.
My students will not only listen to books on tape in this center, but they will also engage in discussions about the books they have read and listened to, thus developing their reading comprehension, listening, and speaking skills.
