Help me give my students a Lego wall so that they can build, use their imagination, and increase their spatial awareness for Math, Reading, Science, and Center times!
My school is a small rural neighborhood school where I consider the students my family. I have taught first grade here for 34 years; many of those in the same classroom. I have had many second generation families of students come through my classroom each year. I live and also go to church in this neighborhood and volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank in the summer here. Sixty-one percent of the students come from an economically disadvantaged home, and many live with one parent or are being raised by grandparents.
My students are normal first graders in that they love to play outside at recess, love anything electronic, and love books and math manipulatives.
They are motivated and fascinated by technology and will work harder for it and with it. Parents and grandparents sometimes struggle to come up with the basic supplies. Because we are a family; thankfully, we have churches who help with those kinds of normal supplies.
I am asking for materials to set up and build a Lego stem wall in my classroom and then the supplies that the students will need to help them build.
My Project
Do you remember how much fun it was as a child to finish a puzzle or play with Lego sets? Children today have very few opportunities to do those things. I want to build a Lego wall in my classroom that will provide students a place to develop these skills and create again. I plan on using the wall as a center and letting students build words and math problems as well as using it as a place to let their imaginations rein free and just build during selected times.
Learning with Legos will give my students an opportunity to develop their creative and spatial senses.
They will have fun as they grow!
My students come from low income families and Lego sets are not readily available to them. Having this Lego wall in the classroom will enhance our centers and increase my students' spatial awareness and development which is so important in today's world. I hope to give the budding engineers in my classroom the extra push they need and the time to grow and develop.
Our Math, Science, and Reading will all be helped and affected by the Lego wall. The students will build Math equations, Reading words, as well as develop spatial awareness and a sense of how things work together. They will also see how simple machines work as they build and create with the Lego wall.
