I would like for my first grade students to investigate life-cycles through observing the dramatic changes which occur within the different stages of both a real frog and real butterflies. For my students to watch this transformation, the project would require the purchase of a tadpole kit and caterpillars. I plan to begin the project by learning and examining a frog's life-cycle, and then continue focusing on life-cycles with studying the different stages of butterflies. The students will keep a journal to track and document the life-cycle changes. Art, literature, and math will also be integrated into the project through investigating non-fiction books, internet research, learning songs, creating poetry, enjoying fiction books, studying symmetry and shape, painting, and craft-making. The skill of comparing and contrasting the amphibian life-cycle to an insect life-cycle will extend beyond this project and allow for further understanding of other creatures' life-cycles. The goal is to deepen my students' knowledge of life-science by providing a hands-on opportunity to learn. My students need an experience such as this to discover the incredible real-life metamorphosis of a frog and a butterfly with their eyes and within their world.
