My students need measuring devices (carpenter's squares) and devices for hole layout (center and transfer punches) for our Industrial Arts course (woodworking, metalworking, and more).
My students walk in ready to deliver and take on the tasks of the class. When they are all here, I can confidently say, "All of my favorite students are here today," as they boast about who, if any, is the actual favorite.
I teach at a K-12 school where students readily accept one another as they are.
Their camaraderie impresses me daily and allows us to dive deep into authentic learning experiences. My students' exposure to opportunities is limited in our distant, rural setting. As a result, the students love novel, new information, and are filled with curiosity.
My Project
One of my favorite parts of teaching Industrial Arts is tapping into the creative potential of our students. In class, we enjoy utilizing design thinking to come up with project ideas and solve problems.
Fundamental layout, measuring, and building skills are the backbone of creative work in many industries and hobbies.
Everything from architecture to sewing requires an element of spatial reasoning, basic geometric relationships, and an understanding of measuring systems.
I've carefully chosen these tools as they will best serve our students for our projects. We need carpenters squares to increase the number of times student get to use this very common tool. We use these tools to draw cut lines, check for square, and take measurements in our woodworking and metalworking projects.
We also need punches to make hole layout for drilling accurate holes, in both metal and wood, more accessible for students. Transfer punches will be used to make duplicating parts of our builds quicker.
Center hole punches are also requested so that when students have laid out the location they need to drill a hole (by use of the carpenter's squares) they'll be able to indent the center point of the hole giving the drill bit an accurate path to follow.
Let's provide our students these tools so we can better capitalize on student creativity while giving students the fundamental knowledge applied in many fields.
