Life Skills: Gardening and Sustainability

Help me give my students the materials they need to continue to learn and access their education in ways that will teach them how to be effective community contributors, even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

My Project

Part of the focus in our classroom is my student's learning life skills to prepare them for adulthood. These skills help promote independence, as well as teaching them to collaborate with their peers. Garden instruction is a crucial part of our classroom curriculum and combines a variety of subject areas, including health, math, reading, and behavior management. Students learn about sustainability and how to grow their own food. Additionally, students learn about nutrition, following directions, and cooking the food they have grown. In order to provide garden instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic and as we mover forward, each student must have their own set of supplies. This requires our classroom to purchase more sets of items to ensure every student enrolled in our class will have their own materials. Additionally, wear and tear from usage requires us to purchase new supplies. As our gardening program has become more advanced, we also require new supplies to support the students.

With these garden supplies, students' learning of crucial and useful functional skills will continued to be a part of the curriculum in our class.
