My students need a set of cookware materials and some visually based cookbooks to increase life skills independence. Materials list found in "Look n Cook" book.
Some of the skills many people take for granted are a daily struggle for others. Through creating meaningful, life-related experiences, these kids could start to build the independence they crave.
My students are second through fourth graders on the moderate to severe end of the Autism spectrum.
They love to get their hands dirty with some great interactive activities that help them to expand their abilities and meet their sensory needs. Even more, these kids love to eat! They look forward to snack and lunch time, and so what better way to teach them some life skills than to incorporate what they love!
My Project
In a classroom designed for kids with moderate to severe disabilities, it is important to make sure that curriculum is life-based and the skills taught are useful on a daily basis.
By helping fund this project, you will be helping my students:
1) learn proper kitchen safety
2) practice math, science, and basic life skills in a real world application
3) practice fractions by measuring foods
4) practice following directions by using the picture-based cook books
5) practice serving and cleaning up after themselves.
These are just a few examples of what they will get out of the materials provided by this project. Most of all, they will gain life skills while having fun making healthy and nutritious snacks and meals! My students need a set of cookware materials and some visually based cookbooks to increase life skills independence.
Through learning and practicing the life skills of basic cooking, these kids can become more confident and independent in their daily lives.
Around school and at home, these kids need constant support and guidance. The skills that many take advantage of, like bathrooming, changing clothes, and preparing a snack, can be a struggle for these kiddos. This project will help promote successful independence!
