Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The life skills students in our school currently operate our school store, and the refrigerator they use is non-functional. Some of the items (bottled water) need to be kept cold; thus, a refrigerator is needed.
The life skills students, those who have significant cognitive and functional challenges, benefit from running the store in that they are utilizing and practicing skills learned in the classroom in real world environments.
Skills such as money values, money exchange, adding change, social politeness, direction following, and working collaboratively, among other things.
Operating the school store gives my students the opportunity to generalize learned skills to further their independence, as well as provides them with real world experience.
