Help me give my students, who have severe developmental delays, furniture for a space where they can calm down and use self-regulating skills to decompress and come back to the class, ready to learn.
My students have severe developmental delays, and with that can come some behaviors that cause them to need to leave the classroom to calm down. This project will allow me to create two "calm room" spaces for my students to use their self emotional regulation skills to calm down and re-join the class for learning. Currently, when one student has a behavior, the rest of the class must leave the room and miss learning time for that one student to calm themself down. These spaces will allow instruction for the rest of the students to continue while that one student uses the calm room to decompress and get back to learning. The items selected for this project are to help the students regulate through touch, sight, tactile stimulation and help comfort them. A comfortable chair in form of bean bag is also provided to allow the students to get as comfortable as possible while they self-regulate. White boards will help communication with the students when they choose to not speak, or draw to help bring down emotions.
Fidget toys, and carpets allow the students to feel on their feet and hands.
The space will be stimulating from the bottom of their feet to the tops of their head- all to help them self- regulate and rejoin the rest of the class for learning.
