I teach 13-15-year-olds with students with a variety of intellectual and physical disabilities. My classroom focuses on both academics and functional life skills. We focus on academic skills that are on their level, which is not their "grade level." They are each independent and unique and require specialized instruction to help build their needs. We are focusing on promoting life skills that will help them build independence.
This program is new to the junior high school and lacks the resources needed for students to be successful in life and in school.
My Project
My students are in a specialized program that helps them practice life skills in a meaningful way. We currently have been cooking weekly snacks and practicing reading and math skills in worksheets. These materials will help my students open a coffee cart business to the staff at school.
We will use our coffee cart business to practice money skills, taking orders, fulfilling orders, and interpersonal skills when delivering orders.
All skills that are practiced are vital for future employment success for students.
Students will take ownership of the business and it will give them a sense of accomplishment, all while practicing future employment skills on a weekly basis.
More than half of students from low‑income households
