I am a teacher of a Middle School Life Skills class and my students continue to inspire me daily. My students have varying abilities and unique needs. I have students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and other related disabilities in my classroom. Some students are verbal, some are nonverbal and some come from Spanish speaking homes.
The limitations my students face prevent them from age-appropriate activities, yet, despite these challenges, my students love attention, they are kind and caring, they love to learn and enjoy interacting with each other, given a structured environment.
Their reading level in my class range from a 1st - 2nd second grade level, with limited comprehension ability, academically and socially. With every small step, each one of my students strives to reach their potential. They take pride in their efforts and are willing to try new things that will help them reach their goal.
My Project
My students have a language based disorder which significantly impacts their social comprehension and communication skills, especially when interacting with others in a social situation. It is a challenge for my students to interact with peers of their own age. Learning to play checkers will provide them opportunities to learn age-appropriate games and learn the specific language that is used in the game.
The materials I have requested, Peradix Chess Set Magnetic Chess Checker Board Game will help to support the life skills needed to socially interact with others, build friendships, create opportunities for communication, either verbally or non-verbally, and build patience for becoming a good-sport while learning the strategies needed for critical thinking.
This type of activity will build critical thinking skills, focusing and looking for details across all subject areas in school. I am excited to see my students socially bloom and have fun while learning.
