My Science Skills class is having difficulty learning science skills without any hands-on activities and spending days in vocabulary and worksheets! These 9th and 10th graders from rural Mississippi are bright and talented students, but have very limited resources available to them.
Science Skills classes are heavy laden with ecology topics and as a teacher using the book to describe real-world situations can be difficult at times. This class has an old textbook and a few dated posters on the wall to attempt to stimulate learning. My students are the type to lose interest quickly and they need a dose of reality learning to get them excited about the material.
With this rivertank ecosystem, I can bring the study of our environment literally to life in the classroom and give these students the real-life connection to the content that they deserve!
