These kindergarten students spend a majority of their day in a general education kindergarten classroom learning academic and social skills.
The rest of the day, they spend in my classroom to receive extra support for academics, language, communication, social skills, and anything else they might need that is not covered in the general education curriculum.
They love to learn, they love to socialize with their friends, and most of all they love to come to school. They are fun, energetic, caring, enthusiastic, and very eager to learn new things.
My Project
My students need to learn to become more independent with some of their basic skills (such as the calendar and sharpening their own pencils). We currently have a calendar on the board with some weather activities beside it. This calendar activity board will give them more opportunities to learn each day outside of the typical "today is..." discussions.
The pencil sharpener will allow the students to take ownership of their school supplies and to learn when they really need to sharpen a pencil. The manual pencil sharpener is very difficult for my students to manipulate with their many fine motor challenges. This electric sharpener will be a great addition for them.
They are, also, working on expanding their communication abilities through activities that we have done in the classroom. A DVD of memories will help them develop language around their activities they have done during kindergarten and it will give them the first step in being able to share their experiences with others.
This project is important to help teach these kindergarten students how to become more independent as they approach their first grade school year.
This project will also give them an opportunity to look at their memories, so they can continue to talk to their friends about things they have done in kindergarten. It is difficult for my students to remember all of the details, so with access to DVDs we can create a resource for them of their memories.
