My Project

I teach 10th grade ELA to ELL and academically challenged students in an urban high school here in Honolulu, Hawaii. The students I serve are from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and the "mainstream" material used in "traditional" canonical literature does not resonate with them. While their skills may not be the same, they all share the desire to read about characters that have the same struggles as they do.

Using a mix of diverse plays other than Shakespeare for my students to choose from, it helps my ELL, LGBT+, AAPI, inclusion, and struggling learners to understand theme and the resiliency of the human spirit, and they can discuss topics that are relevant and of interest to them without being judged.

I feel that students' voices need to be heard, and validated. We can go beyond Shakespeare, and teach these themes in a more inclusive way that allows students to have opinions and mature conversations.

Oracy skills would be strengthened through the use of plays, which would also help with students' confidence levels, which, in turn, would also help them in their future aspirations of college, the military, or entering the workforce. Through the use of relevant material, I can help show them that literature is relevant to life, not just the classroom.
