I am an elementary Life Skills teacher in a high poverty school. All of my students receive free lunch. We currently have four Life Skills classes in our building. There are over 40 students with a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, sensory or visual impairment, and Autism. Our students require all academics to be modified, and they access the curriculum through a variety of methods.
We have a big goal this year .
. . to create a multi-sensory learning center for ALL the classes to use. This therapeutic room will allow children who are non-ambulatory to get out of their wheelchairs and explore materials safely. Students with limited vision will be able to access the light stimulation they require. Cause and effect activities will also be readily available for students working on those skills. Students with behavioral challenges can also use this room as a calming environment or for reinforcement.
My Project
By adding a well-built dollhouse, furniture and multi-racial doll families to our classroom, students will have the potential for increased vocabulary development, important life skills to be learned: taking turns & sharing as well as opportunities to work through some of life's issues in a safe place.
Through dollhouse play, students will be able to learn so many things!
Imagination, creativity, fine motor skills, organizational skills, classification skills, role-playing and problem-solving to name only a few.
Adding a dollhouse to our classroom will help support the development of important oral language skills as children explore, create, and learn while they play.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
