My Students
My students’ worlds have been turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I teach in a low-income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, and 85% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast, their daily source of nutrition. The school services many students who live in transient shelters. Eighteen percent of our students have special needs and receive special services.
Our class is comprised of general and special education students.
The students are African American, Haitian, Latino, and Arabic.
My students are learning fully remotely; this is their first school experience and I am trying to enhance distance learning to meet the needs of my students and their families.
Many of the parents are overwhelmed while trying to keep their children safe. They are stressing and they do not understand that we learn through play. I am working daily to help my students and their parents.
My Project
My young Pre K students are learning remotely. Our new unit is all about babies. The theme has high interest and relevance for our children in pre-K, as they may have younger family members or experiences with babies in their daily lives. This unit is important since it may help children who may be dealing with the social and emotional issues that can arise with the addition of a new baby to a family. We will be learning about animal babies too.
I want each child to have the opportunity to have a floor puzzle at their house; It is important to have those basic skills: physical skills of holding puzzle pieces and turning them until they fit; Cognitive skills, as they solve the problems of a puzzle; Emotional skills: they learn patience and are rewarded when they complete the puzzle.
Our youngest students will enjoy the opportunity of putting the animal baby farm puzzle while thinking about being a big sister or big brother.
