This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low-income, high-poverty school district close to the US-Mexico border. Many of my students speak another language socially and at home, and have strong cultural ties in the community. Some of my students struggle with attendance, so engagement is an important part of getting kids to school.

My students love those "ah-ha" moments so intrinsic to science learning.

My students are resilient, creative, and determined to be successful. Although our school's motto is "Clawing our way to college", we also encourage vocational education through career academies: iSTEM, Visual and Performing Arts and Culinary Arts. My students bring a lot of issues and struggles into the classroom, but it is all a part of a rich, vibrant school culture that values education and diversity.

My Project

Our biology classroom needs a digital microscope so that discoveries can be shared! A digital microscope will allow groups of students to collaborate with each other as well as the teacher. A digital microscope will also let the teacher share microscopic discoveries with the whole class as the selected microscope has the ability to interface with a projector. There are many opportunities throughout the school year when a digital microscope would enhance understanding and improve engagement with content. Our current compound microscopes, while still functional, are very old and do not allow for the digital sharing of images. We are fortunate to have laptops for every student, so a digital microscope will expand our functionality with technology!
