Life Imitates Art

My project needs storytelling kits to enhance my students' performance in listening skills, reading comprehension, and help build critical thinking skills.

I teach 18 pre-kindergarten children in the Bronx. Many of the children are coming from disadvantaged backgrounds and many are recent immigrants from various countries. My school is a large, urban school where 100% of the students are offered free lunch. Through the use of educational tools, independent of the written word, pre-k students will see children's literature come to life before their eyes. Little children love to hear stories. They always listen a little more when the stories come with exciting props. I would love to provide my students with story props they could actually hold and see. Storytelling is essential in pre-k and will be beneficial in preparing them to read. I believe these materials will enhance my students' performance in listening skills, reading comprehension, and help build critical thinking skills. Children learn best through experiences that are integrated and multi-sensory. I will also implement a storytelling center. The children will be able to act out their favorite books and stories. This would develop an understanding of concepts such as setting and sequence of events. The children would be able to use this center to retell stories and use their imagination. The children would love to use props to retell stories and this would make it more meaningful for them. As a teacher, my goal is to expose my students to as many materials and experiences as possible. Quality literature development in young children can be enhanced dramatically by including storytelling props in the lesson. It improves their cognitive, social, emotional and language skills. Thank you for believing in the magic of storytelling and believing in my students' enough to read this proposal. Exposure to literature and storytelling early in a child's life is the key to a future filled with better educated individuals.
