Life Full of Color for Students with Autism

My students need a color printer and accessories so that we can provide them with visuals that are accessible to their level of cognitive functioning.

My Students

Our students with disabilities require specialized instruction, including accommodations and modifications to the curriculum and classroom environment that require additional planning and resources than readily available to teachers. Many are affected by severe autism, and have deficits in verbal, physical, and intellectual functioning.

Many times, learning with a cognitive disability can be a constant struggle, though the resiliency and talent that shine through our students astounds us on a daily basis.

These students are strong and beautiful, and they deserve the best education possible so that they can learn to share their abilities with the world.

My Project

I am asking for a color printer and ink, as well as laminating sheets and velcro so that I can make adapted learning materials for my students. Many students with autism have a difficult time processing information, and require visual cues to complete daily tasks in the classroom. Some visual cues include visual schedules, signs, and communication boards. The task of providing visuals to meet students' needs is a labor, cost, and time-intensive project, as each student requires individualization based on their learning style, cognitive functioning level, and educational needs. The materials need to be accessible and long-lasting, requiring laminating and adhesives such as Velcro to be functional.

In the end, visuals such as color symbols and pictures can make all the difference in a child with autism's ability to communicate expressively and receptively, as well as learn in the classroom and community.

As teachers, we are ready and willing to support our students in creating their individualized materials, but need resources that are not readily available in public schools, such as a color printer and laminating.
