This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our day begins with students arriving from the bus or their walk to school. They are greeted and their hygiene needs are assessed immediately. The dash to find what each student needs begins and is addressed before their peers notice. The struggle begins when we don't have what we need to help them.

My students are identified as Special Education students who are all intellectually disabled.

Due to this they learn an alternative curriculum than their same-aged non-special education peers. This alternative curriculum is called Life Skills Support. In addition to learning basic skills, they are also learning how to care for themselves and basic job skills. Our school is the beacon of hope for students, their families, and the neighborhood as a whole.

My Project

The materials requested would supply our classroom with the hygiene items we need on a daily basis to support each individual student's needs. The students would be able to learn personal hygiene skills inside the classroom, throughout the school day and additional materials will be sent home so that students lacking these materials will have access to them. Students without home access to these materials will be able to learn how to use them properly and begin to feel pride about their appearance and build on their self-esteem as their personal accountability increases in their ability to maintain good hygiene consistently. They will have access to items many of us take for granted such as soap, lotion, toothbrushes and paste, band-aids, lip balm and bath wipes. They will learn that outside of our community there are others who care about them.

These donations will improve my classroom by allowing the students, staff and me to have access to supplies to support students with their hygiene needs.

At first, the staff would be able to help students faster with the most hygiene needs and then we will be able to teach the students how to independently do it themselves. It would free up finances by supporting the hygiene needs of our students and allow those finances to support the students' many other needs such as uniforms, coats and shoes.
