It is very difficult to fully understand a concept you have never seen carried out in the real world. Under the Common Core standards my students are required to understand the life cycle of various animals, but do not have background experience or exposure to such things in their daily lives.
My students are from a low-income area of Michigan.
Their parents work hard and value education, but many of them do not have the means necessary to provide enriching scientific experiences at home. Many of my students to not have the life experiences many others take for granted.
My Project
I am requesting an incubator and other materials required (all of which are included in the set I have selected) to complete a unit on life cycles in my classrooms. Throughout this unit my students will study and witness first hand the life cycle of a chicken. This knowledge will lend itself to understanding many of our core science concepts and lead to a deeper understanding of the life sciences. It will also provide a meaningful and enriching experience most of my students will remember for the rest of their lives.
Funding this project will bring an excitement for education and science, and an appreciation and respect for animals that cannot be fostered through the use of workbooks and diagrams alone.
I have taught this unit in the past in a school district in which the supplies were available to me, and I have seen the love for learning it sparks in my young learners. I would love to share this joy with my students in my new Michigan classroom.
