This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the last five weeks, we have all been hunkered down in our individual homes, trying to process all the changes in our lives. I am in daily contact with my 30 of my 150 students. We text, email, talk on the phone, and try to learn using Microsoft TEAMS, but it is a huge challenge. Many of my students don't have access to technology and so things are not equitable. These kids want to be back in school and return to a sense of normalcy.

Many of the students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with limited resources available.

I want to help alleviate this. Our school, built in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program.

Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers. This allows them to keep the same core set of teachers who will stay with them for their entire middle school journey. Team Texas is home to a diverse group of young people all striving to do the best they can with the materials they are given.

My Project

The new school year in August will be difficult for so many reasons. We don't really know what school is going to look like when we get to go back into our physical school buildings, so I just want to make sure that the students don't need to worry about basic supplies. I teach 7th and 8th grade science in a urban middle school. I rotate through groups of 35+ students for five periods. We are requesting pencils, folders, and whiteboard markers.

These colored folders will be a phenomenal way to store papers that can't leave the classroom, organized by class period.

The amount of papers that I find floating around the classroom on the floor after each class is staggering. I would like to use these colored folders to organize individual students work by class period. This way, when they are working on papers throughout the week, it can be safely stored in a folder that will be collected at the end of each class period.

Of course, kids also need pencils to write with, and this project will allow me to give students a pencil if they need one. I am constantly looking for new pencils that I can give out, and these golf pencils with erasers fit the bill. The whiteboard markers will be used to post assignments on the board.
