Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Que libro estas leyendo? What book are you reading? Books in Spanish in leveled classroom libraries are a must in today's globalized classrooms. My students have read each book in Spanish at least four times. They want to read magazines in Spanish.

Our middle school is in the heart of a highly diverse, multi-cultural neighborhood.

Our students come from all over the world. We have 26 different languages spoken at our school, Spanish being the second largest group after English. The students in the Dual Language/Spanish Immersion Program started with 13 students three years ago in 6th grade. Now, we have close to 70 students. Next year we will have 100 students. By the year 2013 we expect to be serving 125 students. We need materials in Spanish NOW!!! I have a limited classroom library. We need magazines and dictionaries in Spanish.

My Project

By donating these magazines in Spanish and student dictionaries, students will be able to learn how to read non-fiction articles of high interest for young readers around the world, giving them a global perspective right from the classroom. The magazines include an online supplement for students to connect with other kids around the world, in Spanish. Activities that can be done with the magazines, range from partner readings, to submitting student work in different categories (comics in Spanish, Personal Stories, Geography Around The World, etc.) All of these are written in Spanish!!! The magazines will stay in our classroom. However, the students will be able to check them out to take them home and read with their parents and siblings. Students will be writing letters and emails to students in different countries, (Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Chile and other Latin American countries). Students will also be creating their own version of a magazine in Spanish.

By donating to my project "Libros, Por Favor!

Becoming Fully Bilingual", you will be exposing middle school children to the benefits of becoming a globalized citizen by learning a second language. By donating to this project, students will be on their way to becoming literate in Spanish and being able to read multiple genres in Spanish. By donating to my project, students will be able to use a bilingual dictionary and see it as a tool to better understanding words in context. Muchisimas Gracias!
